A powerful shot doesn’t start with strength; it starts with technique. Just like when you’re throwing a ball or hitting a golf ball, you’re not going to go as hard as you can if you want it to land in a specific place. Once you’ve mastered the shooting technique, you can increase the intensity. With repetition, power will come. Let’s break down the technique.
Plant Foot
Place this next to the ball — not too far forward or too far back. This is your steering wheel. If the ball is moving, step ahead of it so that by the time you hit it, it’s in line with your plant foot. Make sure your plant foot is facing your target and positioned at the right distance from the ball — not too close or too far.
Contact on the Ball
You want to hit the middle of the ball. If you strike too low, it will go sky-high.
Contact with your Foot
Strike the ball with your laces, keeping your toes pointed down toward the ground and your ankle completely locked all the way through the follow-through motion. The natural tendency is for your toes to flick up after making contact, but try to keep them pointing down for as long as possible until your foot lands on the ground.
Body positioning
Keep your chest over the ball. This should happen naturally if your technique is clean. If you find yourself leaning back and looking up toward the sky, check if your plant foot is placed correctly. If it’s too early, you may be reaching for the ball.
Follow Through Motion
Land on your shooting foot. This should happen naturally and will help maximize power in your shot. If you punch at the ball or follow through to the left or right, your shot will likely lack strength and accuracy. Think of a baseball swing or a basketball shot—the follow-through is crucial!
