The Techne Training System is very special to me because it encapsulates a process that has come to define who I am -- the process of striving for mastery.
I remember knowing by the time I was nine that I wanted to be a professional soccer player.
I was very fortunate to have some important coaches and mentors who showed me ways I could practice with the ball outside of my team environments. As a young player I began working on juggling, dribbling, and striking the ball every day on my own.
Although I wasn't aware of it at the time, as a 12-year-old I embarked on a journey to become a master of the ball. This is a journey that I want to share with you. It can be frustrating, mesmerizing, competitive, meditative, engaging, and daunting all at the same time. Taking my development into my own hands is a process that defined who I am both on and off the field.
In 2005, I began my college career at The University of North Carolina (UNC), where I won two National Championships, set an NCAA record with 105 consecutive starts, and scored the fastest goal in women’s collegiate soccer history. My college jersey, number 17, was retired. As a nine-year-old, I never could have dreamed of something like that! Above all, though, my years at UNC taught me how to strive for constant improvement, both physically and mentally.
I played professionally for over 10 years, for various clubs around the U.S. and overseas. I also have 26 caps and have scored 1 international goal with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Every day I feel extraordinarily grateful to have lived my childhood dreams. Soccer is a game that I love and respect far beyond my own involvement. There are many things in life and soccer that we can't control, but I found great joy in taking responsibility for the aspects of my game that I could control and I worked to improve every day.
Techne is my way of giving back all the wonderful lessons soccer has taught me. It teaches soccer skills, but more importantly, it teaches that through hard work, discipline, and focused training, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. I hope that you find the process of striving towards mastery as rewarding and empowering as I have!
Pursue your goals with every ounce of your being, and above all, love the journey.
